Project Overview
The homeowner initially contacted MSER Ltd to discuss the installation of solar PV and battery storage as part of their plans to improve the property’s energy efficiency. During the consultation, it became clear that they were also considering additional insulation measures. However, they were reluctant to undertake the extensive internal works typically required, which would have involved stripping back and renovating multiple rooms throughout the home. Rather than approaching the solar installation as a standalone project, MSER Ltd identified an opportunity to deliver a wider energy-efficiency upgrade that would improve the building fabric, reduce energy consumption and minimise disruption to the household.
The Challenge
Improving the thermal performance of an existing property often requires significant internal insulation works, bringing with it disruption, mess and lengthy renovation programmes. The homeowner wanted to enhance the property’s energy performance and install renewable energy technology, but without the inconvenience of carrying out major works throughout the living areas. The challenge was to find a practical solution that would deliver meaningful improvements while keeping disruption to a minimum.
The Solution
MSER Ltd proposed a combined roofing, insulation and renewable energy upgrade. As the existing slate roof was due for replacement, the project created an ideal opportunity to improve the property’s thermal performance from the outside. The existing roof coverings and sarking boards were removed, allowing new insulation to be installed externally before the roof was rebuilt. This approach avoided the need to insulate most of the property internally, significantly reducing disruption for the homeowner. Only the gable walls required internal insulation works.

The Results
The entire project was completed in approximately four weeks, from scaffold erection through to final dismantling. The completed works delivered a more energy-efficient home, improved thermal comfort and enhanced renewable energy generation, while avoiding the extensive internal renovation works that would normally be associated with a project of this nature.
